Over the past several years the downtown area has been going through a renaissance. There are more buildings being converted to live work spaces, more young couples walking their dogs at night, and a vibrancy not seen in this neighborhood for decades.
Aurora is the second largest city in Illinois and it’s downtown neighborhood is located on Stolp Island in the Fox River. First Friday art walks are visited by thousands of people each month. Downtown has dress boutiques, architects, theaters, a new library, and interior design firms.
Metropolitan Coworking was founded in 2015 by Jason Sunderland and Matt Hook. They wanted to take an active role in promoting business, technology, art and culture in downtown Aurora.
The name Metropolitan Coworking is a reference to the history of the building we inhabit: the historic Metropolitan Business College Building, on Downer Place in Downtown Aurora IL.
This building was built in 1915 by architect Eugene Malmer and has interesting parapet detail design and window detailing. Malmer also designed the Sherer Building across the street. Both buildings were owned by Joseph Stolp Sherer, grandson of early pioneer Joseph Stolp, the islands namesake. View photos
This historic downtown Aurora building now has a professional shared office space where history meets the future for the individual or small business person to work.
